Day 114

We are continuing to look at James 1:8 "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." Do you feel unstable in your ways? Does your Christian walk have a consistency to it? Are you able to stand in faith regardless of the events that occur? Whether you are a new believer or a mature believer, the foundation of stable standing is found in the practice of spiritual disciplines. These include private prayer, Bible study, church attendance, and the sacraments (taking communion when offered). These are considered disciplines because they are to be performed whether you feel like it or not at the particular moment.

Matthew Poole's Commentary describes "unstable" as "either unconstant, without any fixedness or consistency of spirit, as ready to depart from God as to cleave to him; or unquiet, troubled, full of inward tumults." God wants your relationship with Him to be fixed and sure. He wants to know you are with Him regardless of the pressures of life. He has made many promises to you and expects you to believe His Word of promise and not doubt Him.

The unstable man is in effect calling God a liar. God says He will not leave you or forsake you; He says that He is your protector and sufficiency. If you are worried about things in life you are saying that He is not going to do what He said he will do. Taken in that light we see the importance of being stable. Anything less becomes an affront to God and His Word. Today make a firm declaration of faith that you are going to stand on the Word of God and you will be stable in all your ways. If you feel the wind of trouble at your back, stand strong knowing that nothing can defeat God's Word. What He says goes!
