Day 113

Today we are going to look at James 1:8: "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." This describes someone who has a split personality when it comes to the things of God. Perhaps when all goes well, they praise the Lord, read His Word and are a shining light for Jesus. However, when things go wrong the story is much different. They say they don't want to read the Word, are too depressed to pray and they complain why has God done this to them. This is being double minded. Either God is God regardless of your circumstances or He isn't. Which is it in your life?

Albert Barnes NT Commentary says of "double minded: "It means, properly, one who has two souls; then one who is wavering or inconstant. It is applicable to a man who has no settled principles; who is controlled by passion; who is influenced by popular feeling; who is now inclined to one opinion or course of conduct, and now to another." If you have ever seen a TV news reporter reporting live from the beach about a hurricane you get the idea. The reporter us trying to stand straight and provide details about the storm. He or she is getting soaked, being tossed by the wind and you know they are just miserable. That is the life of the double minded; they are being tossed around by the world and they are miserable.

Over the next few days we are going to look at this verse and provide assistance to end being double minded. The key to getting rid of this condition is seen in verse 6: "But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering." Faith counters the double mind just like paper covers rock in the children's game. And since faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Rom. 10:17), start in the Word to get some faith and the double mind will begin to pack its bags. Serve an eviction notice today to the double mind and get in the Word. Know that God doesn't want you to be double minded so He has provided His Word to help you. Isn't God good?
