Shield Daily Devotional

Day 112

One morning very early I had a verse jump off the page and speak to me. I want to share with you that verse and what it means. If there is something you have been asking God to do for you, then today is especially for you. First, I need to state something we have previously learned; the Bible is God's voice. As you read His Word it is like Him speaking just to you. With that reminder, look at Psalm 84:11: "For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." As the "sun" God provides light, heat and energy; as "shield" He is our protector. However, it is the final portion that I need to speak to you about.

God will withhold no good from you if you walk uprightly. Spurgeon's Devotional Commentary says of this verse: "What a great promise, or set of promises! Here we have all we need for all time, yea, and for eternity. What an encouragement to pray! If all things are freely given to us of God, let us open our mouths wide in our petitions. What more can God himself say than he has said in this most precious verse?" Early in the morning when I saw this verse for the first time again (I had read it before but it meant something different this time), I saw it as a conditional promise. The condition is our walking uprightly and then we receive good. Now we must remember that what we think is good and what God thinks is good may be different so being in the Word is very important to know what God thinks is good.

Now remember the last few days devotionals; they have been about denying yourself and carrying your cross. If you are doing that then this promise is for you today. You can face today knowing that God will provide for you ("sun"), will protect you ("shield") and will withhold nothing that is "good" for you. Today go find your cross and carry it everywhere you go. God will not withhold good from you today. This is a great place to shout and be blessed!
